The ABC of exotic leather

These days it is ever more complex to explain and to introduce to customers the vast world of exotic leather, certainly also due to new trends of life and the connection they have toward the animal world.

For this reason, certain types of products made from the precious leathers of crocodile, alligator, python and ostrich are increasingly viewed with a critical eye by new society, accusing the manufacturers and lovers of this kind of leather to be causing the extinction of such species.

In reality, many ignore the existence of a CITES certificate, Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of wild fauna and flora, held in Washington in 1973, which aims to regulate and monitor the international trade of endangered species; this document is intended, in a seemingly paradoxical way, to protect and ensure the preservation of the ecosystems of threatened species, thus encouraging their reproduction; in particular, species protected by the Convention are classified according to the level of threat of extinction, and therefore, divided into three categories. To this end, it is obligatory to possess a CITES document, applying for it at relevant authorities, to be able to trade to and from Europe with parts of animal species covered by the Convention, or products made from it, such as accessories.CITES

Adhering to CITES and abiding by existing regulations, undoubtedly supports the safeguarding of the habitat of numerous species which unfortunately today are subjected to the threat of their extinction, due to illegality which often characterizes their commercialization.

How does CITES affects our production?

All leathers we work with come, of course, from their places of origin: the American alligator from Louisiana, the crocodile from South Africa, Australia and Asia, pythons from Asia and ostriches from Africa.

From there, to ship to Italy, exporters must obtain the necessary certification. And so is the first step of the procedure.

The Made in Italy process begins the moment in which the hides make their entrance into Italy: from there, they are worked meticulously and with all the techniques of Italian artisan tradition, which will give the final product unique traits of elegance and luxury.

Next, after the creation of the model by our designer, it will be manufactured directly by our own artisans here in their homeland! We then proceed to the cutting of the leather, by in-house staff, or by the artisan with this specific skill; everything will be sewn by hand, with the help only of a small sewing machine. Naturally the product specimen must be suitable for the working of exotic leather, in a way that allows the expert craftsman to best emphasize the features.

Each one of our bags or accessories will never be identical to the other, precisely because we reject the concept of mass production, as we firmly believe that the accessories we create unite with the personality of each person.

All accessories created are high-quality products, able to convey the feeling of luxury and value to what you will wear; of course not all types of leather possess the same level of exclusivity: surely the most valuable are the alligator and crocodile, following are ostrich and python. In our opinion the anaconda, because of the scarce availability of this species, represents the crown jewel of production, surpassing even alligator.

Speaking of which, there are many who ask about the difference between the alligator and the crocodile. To this question, we can respond assuming that there are many different breeds of both crocodiles and alligators. Of these, there are various uses, also according to the cost and availability of the leather.

In addition, the two species have, despite strong resemblance, physical differences: the crocodile has a pore on each scale, while the alligator has an umbilical scar, a peculiarity unique to this reptile! Other differences can be found in form and design of the scales, where the crocodile ranges from medium to shrinking form, while alligator goes on in a distinct and immediate manner from one large and boxy form to one small and round. Undoubtedly these features do not undermine in any way the softness and sinuousness of the finished accessory!

The quality of the raw material, the experienced hands of our Italian artisans combined with the most ancient tradition, are definitely the best business card and guarantee that we can offer to our customers!
