LineaPelle: news and trends for fall/winter 2013-14.

On 9 October 2012 Bologna hosted the LineaPelle fair, the leather fair that takes place regularly every six months in this Italian city; many of the most famous Italian master tanners take part presenting new and interesting proposals regarding the delightful world of leather to all the trade professionals.

This year the event – which we at Gleni just had to check out for  the latest trends in exotic leather – attracted an impressive number of visitors from all over Italy (and beyond). The parking garages were crowded with cars from the first to the last level and finding a place to leave your car, we assure you, was a great effort.

This time the stands themselves looked larger, richer in goods and more visually appealing than  at previous editions, but unfortunately we saw less in the way of innovative and new ideas –  keeping in mind of course that our impressions refer to the exotic leather sector, not to the entire exhibition.

Here at Gleni we are constantly looking for that innovative detail or unusual touch that makes a difference and catches the attention by making an item unique, and we felt that this show did not live up to our expectations. Many of the samples that we looked at during the show seemed little more than copies of previous years’ editions and little space was left to creativity.

In some ways, this isn’t too surprising as the samples on show referred to the autumn-winter 2013/2014 season, and therefore the colors and styles are of necessity much more sober and classic than those for the summer collections, where it’s easy to find bright, bold and sometimes even daring shades that are truly original and different.

However, while we agree on the return of classic and warm colors for the next winter season 2013-2014, we certainly expected something new, especially for the Christmas period; perhaps some special leather processing or some original color combination and were disappointed, as with a few exceptions, most of the tanneries have not proposed anything particularly attractive or exciting.

However we mustn’t forget that, in the end, not everyone likes new trends and proposals, and probably this consideration reined in the inspiration of many tanners, who preferred to focus on classic tones, that have been seen before but are always in vogue.

We on the other hand always like novelty, and whenever there is a striking new departure, we are very happy to share it with you all. And it is these few innovative ideas that were presented during this edition of Linea Pelle that we will talk about in this article.

One of the main different and alternative trends to catch the visitor’s attention,  is the application of glitter and small studs on to python leather to further enhance the structure of the leather itself. Quite fun and original  too is the use of wool, which is applied to the front of the python skin sometimes giving it an almost worn off effect: we are sure that by using this kind of leather we will be able to create very interesting items to wear during the winter period, when the cold is really biting.

Along with these two proposals that particularly interested us, for next fall-winter 2013-14 the laser technique for python processing was re-proposed, which gives a very sophisticated leather with delicate and particular designs on it.

While there is nothing more new on the python leather front, the crocodile presented during this 3-day fair is still a very high quality product, very soft and carefully tanned. Some tanneries continue to offer it in solid colors while others opt for colors with a faded effect, gradually becoming lighter and lighter toward the edges of the leather.  We also found the crocodile leather with a sort of ‘stained’ effect very interesting.

Ostrich too remains anchored to classic simplicity through the use of multiple solid colors with a matt finish, but some tanneries continue to propose this exotic leather in a pearly version, creating particular nuances and exciting reflections that make each color unique and incredibly beautiful to look at.

Unfortunately, as we mentioned, this edition of LineaPelle didn’t completely satisfy us because we could not find what we expected in terms of new trends and ideas for eye-catching exotic leather. We left the fair with only a few samples and some ideas for future collections, but do not worry because we will take care of your needs, by creating something special for you and for all lovers of exotic leather who constantly look for sublime articles, with plenty of reflections and shades that will win your heart and soul in an instant.
