Have you ever noticed how the cuts of the leather chosen can affect the appearance of a bag?
As we mentioned in our previous article, ““The thousands shades and variants of python leather”, snakeskin (in particular python leather) is way richer and more variegated than other kinds of leather, so it can offer an incredible variety of shades. If you need to choose the handbag of your dreams, you might want to pay attention to the variants of leather available, right?
To make sure that your customised piece is the perfect representation of what you had in mind, you should consider many factors and variants, like for example the processing, the shine, the option of decolorized leather or not, the snake’s species or the cut of the python (but also of other species of leather). The last point is the one we are going to discuss in this article.
Probably you have already noticed that the appearance of a handbag, especially for what concerns the scales of the leather, changes a lot from model to model. Sometimes you can find wider scales, which tend to shrink to the sides and appear slightly raised from the skin, thus creating an embossing effect that is characteristic of the python leather; other times, however, the leather is composed of small uniform scales, so that the skin is very homogeneous, with the possibility of reproducing or not the natural pattern of python.
Surely, you have asked yourself if the leather used to realise an item is made of genuine exotic leather or merely printed leather. Here at GLENI, we are often asked questions from people who are worried about the diversity and heterogeneity of the bags.
Actually, there are two main types of snakeskin cut:
Back Cut – It represents the cut of the leather made to emphasize the stomach of the animal (and not the contrary, as it may seem from the name): the cut is made following the vertical line of the back of the animal. This cut is characterized by larger scales at the centre, which get smaller as they reach the two external sides. The natural livery of the python (that is the natural pattern present on the snakeskin), with this cut, is closer to the external sides of the leather and not on the bigger scales at the centre. The softness of this kind of leather is incredible, especially when the leather is not shiny. The bigger the scales, the softer and pleasant to the touch the leather. The size of the scales depends on the size of the leather and on the species of snake used.
Front Cut – It represents the cut of the leather made to highlight the back: the cut is made following the central line of the stomach along the entire length of the animal. The predominant feature of this type of cut is the natural geometric design of the python, which changes from species to species. The scales are mostly smaller and uniform, and they become larger towards the sides of the leather. The skin is “smoother” since the scales are well “stuck” to the skin and they do not tend to open, as it happens in the Back Cut.
You can easily notice how the appearance changes, even in the case of the same item made with two different cuts. That is why is more than normal for many people to raise doubts regarding the genuineness or not of the exotic leather products.
The Back Cut gives the bag a more exotic and richer look, while the Front Cut gives a refined and sober touch to the bag. It is possible to play with the different shades of the leather starting from the choice of the cut, that is in our opinion fundamental for the final result. We can get a mosaic of colours playing with the natural pattern of the python in the Front Cut version or accentuate the nuances above and below the scales in the Back cut; we can focus on the particularity of the design in the Front Cut even using one colour or be surprised by the majesty of the scales in the Back Cut.
Choosing the type of cut that best suits your needs is the first step for a successful final result of the product you desire.
The choice of the cut does not affect the final price of the product, as well as the quality or prestige of the two options.
We all know how the world of fashion works by now: one cut is more in vogue in a season and the other is more fashionable in the following season, so the majority of big brands tends to adapt to the trends.
What we have always recommended is not to follow fashion trends at all costs, but try to make your choice regardless of them. If you have the opportunity to choose and order a personalised item in the leather and cut you prefer and really get the product of your dreams, why not do it? For the record, we can do it.
If the tactile sensations, the softness of the leather or the exotic aspect of the bag are important for you – then choose the Back Cut and you will not regret it. If the refinement, uniqueness and exclusivity of the natural design of the python is all you want – then Front Cut will certainly satisfy your needs.
Naturally, there are many other aspects and factors that can affect the final effect of the product. Some of them are the shine of the leather, the level of decolouration, the species of snake, the size of the animal and, of course, the processing. In our next articles of this section, we’ll look into these factors one by one.
